This session provides school-based practitioners with an introduction to addressing racism in academic settings. It includes discussions regarding common race-related stressors and their psychological, physical, and behavioral consequences on students and families. Concrete strategies from peer-reviewed literature are offered to encourage practitioner reflection and intervention.

Learning Objectives:

  • List three sources of racial stress for students and families of color.  
  • Explain the relationship between critical self-reflection and culturally responsive practice.  
  • Identify three strategies that can be used to promote racial healing of students and families in school settings.

This presentation focuses on early childhood development and how to identify and intervene with young children experiencing learning and behavior problems. Topics include a review of developmental domains of functioning, rationale for assessing young children, assessment domains, methods, sources of assessment data, and characteristics of examiners. Special considerations of working with young children, poverty, and cultural and linguistic diversity are also discussed.

  • State three reasons for assessing young children
  • Name the developmental domains to assess in young children
  • Identify three ways how culture and language may affect assessment outcomes
