Geremy Grant, Ph.D.

Oftentimes, our first point of contact with students and their families is the history gathering interview to understand their needs and concerns. Engaging in culturally responsive practices during this initial exchange helps to set the stage for rapport-building and positive engagement moving forward in the therapeutic or evaluator-to-student relationship. To this end, the workshop discusses common issues that can arise in cross-cultural assessment, particularly during history gathering interviews. Attendees are introduced to several psychosocial constructs to explore when gathering a culturally diverse student’s history. Furthermore, attendees are offered concrete culturally responsive interviewing strategies, and ways to utilize a strengths-oriented approach when gathering a student’s social and cultural history.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe common issues in the interviewing process when working with culturally and linguistically diverse students.

  • List practical suggestions for cross-cultural history gathering based on cited literature

  • Explain the importance of assessing and identifying cultural strengths and supports.
