Oftentimes, our first point of contact with students and their families is the history gathering interview to understand their needs and concerns. Engaging in culturally responsive practices during this initial exchange helps to set the stage for rapport-building and positive engagement moving forward in the therapeutic or evaluator-to-student relationship. To this end, the workshop discusses common issues that can arise in cross-cultural assessment, particularly during history gathering interviews. Attendees are introduced to several psychosocial constructs to explore when gathering a culturally diverse student’s history. Furthermore, attendees are offered concrete culturally responsive interviewing strategies, and ways to utilize a strengths-oriented approach when gathering a student’s social and cultural history.

Promoting collaboration between SPs and SLPs in assessment of dyslexia using XBA within the Simple View of Reading framework. Focus on what is dyslexia vs other disabilities. Provide info as to what are language comprehension deficits. Case study will be used. Interventions and intervention resources provided.
