Why are new materials being shipped out before the scanning programs are updated?

We want this transition to be as seamless as possible for you. Knowing that many educators begin ordering materials for the next school year in the first half of the calendar year, we want to ensure that materials for Levels 5, 5/6, and 6 are ready for use in the 2025-2026 school year. By the time testing is completed and documents are sent for scoring, all scoring updates will be in place.

If you are receiving updated Level 5, 5/6, or 6 materials to use during the 2024-2025 school year, here are a few scenarios to keep in mind:

  1. Testing current kindergarteners (students already 5 years old on or before September 1, 2024)
If you are testing students who were born in 2019 or earlier, the scanning program will successfully process these birthdates even with the updated materials. The position of the bubbles has not changed, so there will be no issues with scanning in this scenario.

  2. Testing incoming kindergarteners (students turning 5 after September 1, 2024)
CogAT does not have norms for children younger than 5 years old, so we assume 4-year-olds will not be tested. If you are testing students born in 2020, their date of birth can still be bubbled. Scanning for the updated CogAT Level 5/6 materials will be available in late February 2025, with Riverside Scoring available starting in April 2025. Given this timeline, it is highly unlikely that testing and submission for scoring will occur before these updates are in place.

  3. Testing with the Iowa Assessments
Whether you are testing current or incoming kindergarteners, you will be able to bubble the birthdate. If testing materials are sent in for scoring before the scanning update, birthdates from 2019 or earlier will be processed successfully, as the bubble positions remain unchanged. For birthdates from 2020 or later, there may be occasional scanning issues, but because Iowa scores are based on grade rather than age, you will still receive valid results.

For those using updated Level 7+ materials during the 2024-2025 school year, there is no need to worry—you will be able to bubble and scan birthdates successfully, as the bubble positions have not changed.
