What are the options for accessing Riverside DataManager on Chromebook devices now that Google is phasing out Chrome apps?

Riverside DataManager can be accessed either through the Google Play Store (recommended) or the legacy Chrome app (temporary option). The Play Store version meets Google’s latest standards and receives updates, while the Chrome app is still usable but not actively enhanced. Instructions are provided for installing on unmanaged and managed devices.

Google is phasing out Chrome apps. To stay supported and secure, Riverside DataManager is now available through the Google Play Store. Districts not ready to transition may continue using the Chrome app for a limited time.


Option 1: Google Play (Android App – Recommended)

  • Meets Google’s latest app and device security standards

  • Updated regularly through the Play Store

  • Remove any older Secure Browser app before installing

Unmanaged Devices

  1. Open the Google Play Store on your Chromebook.

  2. Search for Riverside DataManager (or click here).

  3. Select INSTALL.

  4. Once installed, click OPEN or launch from the Chromebook menu.

Note: If the app doesn’t appear, check that your device supports Android apps (details here). If you cannot install apps, contact your administrator.

Managed Devices (Admins Only)

  1. Sign in to the Google Admin Console.

  2. Go to Devices > Chrome > Apps & extensions > Users & browsers.

  3. Select the organizational unit (OU) to receive the app.

  4. Click Add > Add from Google Play.

  5. Search for DataManager by Riverside Insights and accept permissions.

  6. Under Installation Policy, choose Force Install or Force install + pin to taskbar.

  7. Save changes.

Option 2: Chrome App (Legacy)

  • Secure but no longer updated or enhanced

  • Available only for a limited time

Enable Chrome Apps in Google Admin Console

  1. Sign in with an administrator account.

  2. Go to Devices > Chrome > Settings > Device Settings.

  3. Select the OU with devices to update.

  4. Find Chrome Apps allowed for kiosk mode.

  5. Set to Keep using Chrome apps in kiosk sessions (limited time).

  6. Click Save (may take up to 24 hours to apply).

Install & Launch

  1. Search for the Riverside DataManager Chrome app (or click here).

  2. Assign it to the appropriate OU.

  3. Set Installation Policy to Force Install.

  4. Save changes.

  5. On the Chromebook, open the Apps Launcher > DataManager.

You may continue using the Chrome app until Google ends support.
