How do I create a secure password?
- Include punctuation marks and/or numbers in your password. Example: universe!23.
- Mix uppercase and lowercase letters. Example: Universe!23.
- Include similar looking substitutions, such as the symbol "$" for the letter "S." Example: Univer$e!23.
- Create a unique acronym. Don’t use acronyms that can be found in a dictionary.
Are there passwords I should avoid?
- Don't use the example passwords above ("Universe!23" or "Univer$e!23").
- Don't use passwords that contain personal information (such as your or a family member's name or date of birth).
- Don't use letter patterns that are shown on a computer keyboard (for example, asdf) or sequential numbers (1234).
- Don't use repeating characters (such as aa or 11).
I’ve created a secure password. Now what?
- Don’t let anyone else know your password.
- Don’t email your password to anyone (not even to yourself).
- Do keep a list of your passwords in a safe, offline location or use a program like Evernote Basic for storing passwords securely in the Cloud.
- Get in the habit of changing your password on a regular basis (for example, at the start of a new semester).
