About the Session:

This session will focus on best practices when conducting a comprehensive dyslexia assessment and how the WJ V aligns to the latest research.  The presenters will highlight the definition and characteristics of dyslexia and review the data that should be integrated into a comprehensive dyslexia evaluation.  Specific tests for measuring characteristics of dyslexia from the WJ V will also be highlighted, including a preview of the Dyslexia Test Set included in the WJ V.

Learning Objectives:

  • Obtain an understanding of the definition and characteristics of dyslexia.
  • Obtain an understanding of the assessment components necessary when assessing for dyslexia.
  • Obtain an understanding of the tests from the WJ V that can be utilized within a comprehensive dyslexia assessment.

Instructor Credentials:

Tammy L. Stephens, Ph.D. - Tammy, a Clinical Assessment Consultant for Riverside Insights. Dr. Stephens is an educational diagnostician and former special education teacher and has a Ph.D. in Special Education with an emphasis in Assessment. She is the author of numerous articles published in peer-reviewed journals focusing on topics including dyslexia and dysgraphia evaluations and the importance of considering exclusionary factors. Dr. Stephens is the author of Core-Selective Evaluation Process (C-SEP) and the creator of the Beyond the Score webinars.
 

Carla Proctor, Ph.D. - Carla is an Educational Diagnostician with 17 years of experience testing individuals for disabilities from ages 2 to adult. She works in private practice and contracts with public schools, including Dallas ISD and Winfree Academy Charter School District. Carla has taught Academic Language Therapy and English as a Second Language for various school districts.

She holds a Bachelor’s in Literary Studies, a Master’s in Interdisciplinary Studies focused on Language Development, and a Doctorate in Special Education. Carla has numerous certifications, including Educational Diagnostician, English as a Second Language, and Gifted and Talented, among others.

She has served as President of the Texas Educational Diagnostician Association and the Council for Exceptional Children, and is an advisory board member of the Dallas Branch of the International Dyslexia Association. She was honored with the Dr. Luke Waits Excellence in Education Award by the Dallas Branch of the International Dyslexia Association.
