Andrea Banks, M.Ed.

How we treat and view others, is greatly influenced by our beliefs and experiences. For many of us, if we ask ourselves, “Am I biased?” Most of us would probably answer that question with a resounding “No!” But biases exist everywhere and in everyone. They influence every facet of our lives. They influence our thoughts and behavior. In this session, we will look at how implicit biases can play a role in our evaluation process and, what we can do to limit its influence in our decision making.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify common biases that can exist it the workplace and devise strategies to reduce or eliminate them.
  • Assess their own implicit bias tendencies and work toward a solution to mitigate them.
  • Describe the differences between explicit and implicit bias and how they can be controlled.

Tammy Stephens, Ph.D.
Proper evaluation processes can lead to decreased overrepresentation of students being identified for special education services. Special education policy requires that multiple sources of data be used when determining eligibility for specific learning disability (SLD). When decisions are made based on limited data (e.g., standard scores), evaluators run the risk of inappropriate eligibility determination. Such practices have resulted in the overidentification of minority groups. This session will discuss special education policy and best practices when identifying students with disabilities. Dr. Stephens will highlight the importance of considering all the data when making eligibility decisions to ensure appropriate identification and educational programming.

Learning Objectives:

  • Obtain an understanding of the overrepresentation of minority students within special education
  • Understand the evaluation process for identifying students with SLD
  • Discover the importance of the integration of multiple sources of data within the evaluation process
