9:30 PST / 11:30 CST / 12:30 EST

Dawn Flanagan Headshot
Dawn Flanagan, Ph.D.

This session will briefly describe the pattern of strengths and weaknesses (PSW) method of SLD identification, present current research related to the diagnostic accuracy of PSW, and demonstrate the utility of the PSW method.  Step-by-step guidance will include research-informed case conceptualization, test selection, interpretation of PSW output within the context of all data sources, and linking assessment and PSW results to intervention.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe three differences between PSW methods
  • State two implications of current PSW research for practice
  • List three ways to improve diagnostic accuracy when using PSW

Intellectual Development of Multilingual Learners: Maximizing Test Results

10:30 PST / 12:30 CST / 1:30 EST

Ed Schultz Headshot
Edward Schultz, Ph.D.
The relationship between language and cognition is reciprocal. These abilities, along with academic skills, contribute to an individual’s intellectual development. The Woodcock-Munoz Language Survey III (WMLS-III) assesses cognitive academic language proficiency (CALP), which indicates more advanced language skills. This session will focus on maximizing the information obtained from this tool and demonstrate how it can be used more effectively to determine the presence of a specific learning disability.

Learning Objectives:

The learner will:

  • Understand the relation between language and cognition
  • Understand the role language plays in the acquisition of academic skills
  • Define and distinguish the characteristics of intellectual development
  • Maximize the information obtained from the Woodcock-Munoz Language Survey III as it applies to intellectual development.
