Administration Guidelines

Suggested Start Point: Select a starting point based on the examinee's estimated achievement level.

  • For most Woodcock-Johnson IV (WJ IV) tests, the first page after the tab in your item book provides special instructions on where to begin administration.
  • Suggested Start Points are determined based on an estimate of the examinee's present achievement level, rather than by actual grade or age placement.

For Oral Reading, there are two Suggested Start Points:

  • Grade 1–3: Item 1 (8A)
  • Grade 4–Adult: Item 11 (8C)

Continuation Instructions: Use the following rules to determine additional items to administer, or whether testing should be discontinued.

  • If the score for a section is 5 or fewer points, note that score and move backward to the previous section, continuing until you reach a section that has already been administered or the beginning of the test.
  • If the score is 6 or more points, note that score and move forward to the next section, continuing until you reach a section that has already been administered or the end of the test.

Types of Errors: Self-corrections are not counted as errors.

Scoring: How to Tally Incorrect Responses

Item Scoring:

  • Score of 2 = No errors
  • Score of 1 = One error
  • Score of 0 = Two or more errors

Scoring via Riverside Score:
Riverside Score displays an error if the data entered for Oral Reading is incomplete. This occurs if there is no raw score in 8A or 8C — one of these two is always required, since they are the only standardized starting points. Sections 8A through 8F should each have either a raw score entered or the letter "X" if that item set was not administered. Oral Reading sections should be left blank if the test was not administered at all.

  • Examiners can enter the total score for each item set that was administered.
  • Examiners must enter an "X" for any item set that was not administered.
  • Once a score is entered for an item set, the examiner can specify which errors were committed.

The Errors field corresponds to the test protocol and includes, from left to right:

  • Mispronunciation
  • Omission
  • Insertion
  • Substitution
  • Hesitation
  • Repetition
  • Transposition
  • Ignores Punctuation
