Are there new or updated clusters in Woodcock-Johnson V?
Yes. Woodcock-Johnson V (WJ V) includes both clusters that are entirely new and clusters carried over from Woodcock-Johnson IV (WJ IV) but renamed, recomposed, or otherwise updated — including the widely-used General Intellectual Ability (GIA) cluster.
Entirely New Clusters (did not exist in any form in WJ IV)
Tests of Cognitive Abilities (COG)
- Long-Term Storage (Gl) — split from WJ IV's combined Long-Term Retrieval (Glr) cluster
- Retrieval Fluency (Gr) — the second cluster created from that same Glr split
- Phonemic Retrieval Fluency (Gr) — a new clinical cluster combining Phonemic Word Retrieval (WJ V COG) with Rapid Phoneme Naming (WJ V VTL)
Tests of Achievement (ACH)
- Number Concepts (Gq)
- Spelling Skills (Grw, Ga)
Virtual Test Library (VTL)
- Phonological Awareness (Ga)
- Phonological Manipulation (Ga)
- RAN – Reading (Gs, Gr)
- RAN – Math (Gs, Gr)
Renamed or Recomposed Clusters (carried over from WJ IV, but with a new name and/or different tests)
- Auditory Working Memory Capacity (Gwm) — renamed from WJ IV's Short-Term Working Memory cluster
- Fluid Reasoning (Gf) — same cluster name, entirely new test pairing (Matrices and Verbal Analogies replace Number Series and Concept Formation)
- Reading Fluency (Grw) — same cluster, one test swapped (Word Reading Fluency replaces Oral Reading)
- Reading Comprehension (Grw) — same cluster, one test swapped (Paragraph Reading Comprehension replaces Reading Recall)
- Math Problem Solving (Gq) — same cluster, one test swapped (Math Problem Identification replaces Number Matrices)
- Basic Writing Skills (Grw) — same cluster, one test swapped (Sentence Writing Accuracy replaces Editing)
- Academic Knowledge (Gc) — same cluster name, entirely new tests (Academic Facts and Academic Vocabulary replace Science, Social Studies, and Humanities)
- Visual Processing (Gv) — same cluster, tests expanded into full-length versions (Spatial Relations and Block Rotation), with Picture Recognition dropped
- Cognitive Efficiency (CE) — same cluster, tests changed (Verbal Attention and Number-Pattern Matching replace Letter-Pattern Matching and Numbers Reversed)
- Cognitive Processing Speed (Gs) — same cluster; retains Letter-Pattern Matching and adds Number-Pattern Matching, which replaces the WJ IV's Pair Cancellation test.
- General Intellectual Ability (GIA) — same cluster, now built from 8 tests instead of 7 and no longer differentially weighted by age. It no longer includes a test of Auditory Processing, and the measure of quantitative reasoning/knowledge (Number Series) has been replaced with a Matrices test.
