BDI-3 Spanish: Features, Benefits, and Uses (PDF)
The Battelle Developmental Inventory, 3rd Edition (BDI-3) Spanish (BDI-3 Spanish) is a translated and culturally adapted version of the BDI-3 designed to assess Spanish-speaking children from birth through age 7 years, 11 months. It evaluates developmental skills across five key domains: Adaptive, Social-Emotional, Communication, Motor, and Cognitive
BDI-3 Spanish was developed specifically for Spanish-language administration rather than through simple word-for-word translation. Items were reviewed and adapted for linguistic and cultural appropriateness, including modifications to communication items involving Spanish articulation and phonemes. The assessment was calibrated using 620 U.S. children whose primary language was Spanish, with results equated to the nationally representative BDI-3 English standardization sample of 2,500 children.
The assessment covers 13 subdomains within its five developmental domains and generally requires approximately 5–10 minutes per subtest. Its examiner qualification restriction level is Low.
Benefits
BDI-3 Spanish gives professionals a standardized way to evaluate the developmental strengths and needs of Spanish-speaking children in their primary language. Because Spanish scores are placed on the same underlying scale as BDI-3 English scores, professionals can interpret a child's performance relative to same-age peers measured by the BDI-3.
It can also support ongoing developmental planning by helping professionals identify areas of strength, emerging skills, and areas where additional support or intervention may be appropriate.
