How to Open and Close a Benchmark Window
Overview
Districts manage their own benchmark testing windows in easyCBM. Setting appropriate window lengths helps ensure consistent data and accurate norm comparisons. This article explains how to set benchmark windows and the impact of those settings on reporting.
Steps to Open and Close a Benchmark Window
-
Determine Benchmark Window Length
Plan for a short window—ideally 2 to 3 weeks—to ensure consistent testing conditions. Avoid extended windows, as students testing later may have an academic advantage. -
Refer to Norm Windows for Guidance
Benchmark norms are based on six-week periods. While districts can set custom windows, consider aligning them closely with the following:-
Fall: September 1 – October 15
-
Winter: January 1 – February 15
-
Spring: May 1 – June 15
-
-
Match the Window to Actual Testing
Align the window with the timeframe in which students are scheduled to take their assessments. -
Be Aware of Date Display in Reports
Reports will reflect the first date of the benchmark window, even if a student tests later within the range. For example, if a student tests on October 1, but the window opened on September 1, their score will plot under September 1. -
Save the Window Settings
After setting the start and end dates, click “Update Benchmark Dates†to apply the changes.
Additional Notes
Long testing windows can lead to inconsistent benchmarking data across students. Short, well-timed windows lead to more accurate comparisons and better instructional decisions.
