NCTM vs CCSS Tests
Overview
easyCBM offers two types of math tests—those aligned with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and those based on the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards. While both test types are standards-based, they serve different instructional purposes depending on your district’s curriculum and student performance levels.
Steps – Understanding the Differences and Choosing the Right Test
-
Know the Alignment
-
CCSS Math Tests: Closely follow the Common Core State Standards, adopted by most U.S. states.
-
NCTM Math Tests: Based on the NCTM Focal Point Standards, often used in states not aligned to Common Core.
-
-
Compare the Challenge Level
-
CCSS Math Tests: More rigorous and challenging; best for students performing at or near grade level.
-
NCTM Math Tests: Designed to be more accessible; ideal for students who are significantly below grade level.
-
-
Match Test to Student Need
-
Use NCTM-aligned measures for struggling students to better track small gains in skill development.
-
Transition to CCSS-aligned measures once a student reaches approximately the 40th percentile or shows sufficient improvement.
-
-
Align to Curriculum
-
Choose tests based on the standards your district follows. If your instruction is aligned to CCSS, those measures will provide the most relevant progress data.
-
If not aligned to CCSS, NCTM measures may better reflect your instructional focus.
-
Additional Notes
Both test types emphasize standards mastery over computation or real-world application. They share significant overlap, especially since the CCSS were developed after and influenced by NCTM’s earlier standards.
